I guess it is safe to assume that every Nigerian is familiar with the phrase “weekends are for weddings", besides who does not love the idea of being invited for an occasion where you get to dress up, eat party rice and socialize with potential partners all for free? Being a resident of Lagos, most of the weddings I have attended happened within the city; so am somewhat an expert in narrating some of the common practices that go on at these weddings.
I am positive a couple of you reading are guilty of this, till date I have not been able to understand why most people bring ton of souvenirs to a wedding, but have a prepared list of whom to give them to; why not just distribute these “special souvenirs” at small gatherings instead of giving some people hopes of getting a souvenir.
THE CALL FOR ASO EBI GIRLS
Asides from the standard bridal train, the bride’s friends most times make plans to wear the same attire. Now I have no issues with this, my one and only problem is why on earth are they referred to as “aso ebi girls” during the wedding? I attended my cousin’s wedding in November last year and unluckily for the MC, I and my sister wore the non bridal train attire, so it is time for my cousin’s wife to toss the bouquet and the MC yells towards our table “ASO EBI GIRLS COME OUT NOW!!” The look I gave him ehhn, maybe it is just me but it just makes girls look thirsty at weddings.
THE CHANGE QUEST
All I have to say on this matter is if you are going to a wedding and you want to spray just a thousand Naira; there is really no need to break it into millions of 5Naira notes just to render a dramatic delivery. Pity the person that is going to count that money at the end of the day.
OVER SABI DANCE ARTISTS
It is no crime to express joy at your friend or family member's during wedding, but most people tend to overdo when it comes to dancing. It is just sad when after you where invited for a wedding, you pay the couple back by making people shower you with all the bank notes instead of the couple.
After all that has been said, if you are guilty of any of these four practices; I can only beg you CHANGE. The conversion does not end here; share your thoughts and opinions in the comments section below.
